How to Take a Taxi in Korea: Kakao T, k.ride, Foreign Cards and Fares
Foreign visitors can use Kakao T or k.ride to request a taxi, or flag down an available cab on the street. Confirm the destination in Korean, check whether the app supports your payment method, and make sure the meter is running. You can usually pay by card in the taxi even when an app does not accept your foreign card.
Four ways to take a taxi in Korea
1. Kakao T
Kakao T is widely used in Korea. Enter your pickup point and destination, select an available vehicle type, and check the driver name and license plate. Registration and in-app payment options can vary for overseas visitors. If a foreign card cannot be registered, select Pay to the driver when available.
2. k.ride
k.ride is Kakao Mobility’s tourist-focused service. It provides a multilingual interface and is designed to make signup, destination search and overseas-card use easier for international visitors. Check the current card and phone-number requirements before travel.
3. Uber Taxi
Uber’s Korean service connects passengers with licensed taxis in supported areas. Availability differs by city and time, so keep another taxi option ready.
4. Taxi stand or street hailing
Use an official taxi stand or a clearly licensed taxi. Show the destination’s Korean name and road address. At an airport, do not accept unsolicited rides from people approaching you inside the terminal.
Before getting in
- Check the license plate against the app.
- Confirm the taxi type and pickup side of the road.
- For a street-hailed ride, make sure the meter is used.
- Choose a van or larger vehicle when traveling with several large suitcases.
Payment, fares and extra charges
Many Korean taxis accept credit cards, but carry a backup payment method. Highway or bridge tolls may be added to the fare. Late-night surcharges and regional rules vary. Check the meter or app total before paying and keep the receipt.
During the ride
Follow the route with NAVER Map or another Korean map app and wear your seat belt. If communication is difficult, show the Korean destination name and address instead of relying only on pronunciation.
Lost property
Save the receipt, vehicle number and app booking record. Report a lost item through the booking app, taxi company or local lost-property service as soon as possible.
Airport taxi safety
Use the official taxi queue or designated app pickup point. Ask airport staff if you are unsure where to wait.
