How to Take a Taxi in Korea: Kakao T, k.ride and Street Taxis

 


Taxis in South Korea are metered and widely available, but choosing the right booking method can reduce language and payment problems.


Option 1: Kakao T


Kakao T is widely used in Korea. Enter your pickup point and destination, select an available vehicle type and check the driver name and license plate. Registration and payment options can vary for overseas visitors.


Option 2: k.ride


k.ride is Kakao Mobility’s service designed for international travelers. It offers a multilingual interface and lets visitors request a taxi without learning the full Korean app. Check current card and phone-number requirements before travel.


Option 3: Uber Taxi


Uber’s Korean service connects passengers with licensed taxis in supported areas. Availability differs by city and time.


Option 4: Taxi Stand or Street Hailing


Use an official taxi stand or clearly licensed taxi. Show the destination’s Korean name and address. Avoid anyone approaching you inside an airport terminal offering an unofficial ride.


Before Getting In


Check the plate against the app, confirm the taxi type and make sure the meter is used for a street-hailed ride. Larger or premium vehicles may cost more.


Payment and Extra Charges


Many taxis accept cards, but carry a backup method. Bridge or highway tolls may be added. Late-night surcharges and regional rules vary.


During the Ride


Follow the route on a Korean map app. Seat belts should be used. If communication is difficult, show the destination in Korean rather than relying only on pronunciation.


Lost Property


Save the receipt, vehicle number and booking record. Report a lost item through the booking app, taxi company or local lost-property service as soon as possible.


Airport Safety


Use the official taxi queue or designated app pickup point. Do not accept unsolicited rides. Ask airport staff if you are unsure.
