How to Use an ATM in Korea with a Foreign Card

Withdrawing Korean won is usually straightforward, but not every ATM in Korea accepts overseas cards. Look for a machine marked “Global ATM” or “Global Services.”

Before You Start

Check that your card is enabled for international withdrawals and that you know its numeric PIN. Your home bank and the Korean ATM operator may each charge a fee.

Step-by-Step

1. Look for a Global ATM and international card-network logos.

2. Select English or Foreign Language.

3. Choose Foreign Card, Overseas Card or International Card.

4. Select Cash Withdrawal.

5. Insert your card and enter your PIN privately.

6. Choose the account type if requested.

7. Enter the amount in Korean won.

8. Review the ATM fee and exchange-rate information.

9. Confirm, then collect your card, cash and receipt.

Exchange-Rate Warning

Some machines may offer to convert the withdrawal into your home currency. Compare the displayed rate and charges carefully. Choosing Korean won normally lets your card provider handle conversion, but the best choice depends on your agreement.

If the ATM Rejects Your Card

Check that you selected the foreign-card menu, try another major bank, confirm your daily limit and contact your issuer if necessary. Carry a second card separately.

Safety Tips

Cover the keypad, avoid help from strangers and use an ATM inside a bank or busy facility when possible. Never share your PIN.

ATM screens, fees, limits and supported cards differ by operator and can change.
