Muakjae Station Guide: Sky Bridge, Inwangsan and a Quiet Seoul Forest Walk
Muakjae Station is a quiet Line 3 stop between Dongnimmun and Hongje. It is not a typical first-time tourist destination, but it offers something central Seoul rarely provides: quick access to forest paths between Inwangsan and Ansan without a long trip outside the city.
This guide is for travelers who want a local neighborhood atmosphere, a short hike and a break from crowded palaces and shopping streets.
Quick answer: Should tourists visit Muakjae?
- Best for: Short hikes, forest walks, Muakjae Sky Bridge and quiet residential Seoul
- Subway line: Line 3
- Walking difficulty: Moderate because access roads and trails include slopes and stairs
- Recommended time: 2–4 hours
- Not ideal for: Shopping, nightlife, large restaurant selections or travelers with heavy luggage
- Best weather: A dry, mild day with good visibility
Understanding the area
Muakjae sits in a valley between Inwangsan and Ansan. The neighborhood is divided by a major road, while hillside streets climb quickly away from the station. The green Muakjae Sky Bridge helps connect mountain routes across the road.
This is a hiking-access station rather than a sightseeing hub. Save your route in Naver Map before leaving the subway, because English signs may be less frequent once you enter residential streets.
Is Muakjae a good place to stay?
For most international visitors, Muakjae is better as a half-day stop than a hotel base. The immediate area has limited conventional tourist accommodation and fewer late-night dining choices.
Stay around Gyeongbokgung or Gwanghwamun
Best for: First-time visitors who want major attractions, airport transportation and more restaurants. Muakjae is only a few Line 3 stops away.
Stay around Hongje
Best for: Travelers who want a more residential base in northwestern Seoul with additional buses, restaurants and access toward Hongjecheon.
Small local accommodations
If you find a guesthouse or short-term stay near Muakjae, confirm the exact uphill walking distance, elevator, late check-in and taxi access. A property that looks close on a map may still require a steep climb.
Recommended Muakjae walking route
1. Station → neighborhood trail entrance
Before exiting, open Naver Map and search 무악재하늘다리 or your chosen Inwangsan trail entrance. Several hillside paths exist, so do not rely only on a straight-line map distance.
Buy water and a snack near the station before starting. Shops become less frequent as you climb.
2. Trail entrance → Muakjae Sky Bridge
Follow the signed hillside path toward Muakjae Sky Bridge (무악재 하늘다리). The landscaped bridge crosses above the busy road and links the green areas of Inwangsan and Ansan.
The bridge itself is not a high-altitude attraction like the paid Sky Bridge at Lotte World Tower. It is a small ecological and pedestrian connection that feels surprisingly calm above city traffic.
3. Choose an Inwangsan or Ansan direction
- Inwangsan direction: Better for rocky scenery, city views and connections toward the Seoul City Wall
- Ansan direction: Better for gentler forest walking and connections toward the Ansan Jarak-gil area
Do not attempt to cover both mountains unless you have enough time, water and hiking experience. A short out-and-back walk is usually better for casual visitors.
4. Forest rest and return
Choose a safe viewpoint or rest area, then return toward Muakjae Station. Retracing the known path is simpler than descending into an unfamiliar residential neighborhood.
For a longer planned hike, the official Visit Seoul route for the Inwangsan Dulle-gil trail provides useful background on the forest and mountain sections.
Essential hiking safety
- Do not hike after dark if you do not know the route.
- Avoid trails during heavy rain, snow, strong wind or extreme heat.
- Wear shoes with grip; some stone and wooden surfaces become slippery.
- Carry water and keep your phone charged.
- Stay on marked paths and respect temporary closure signs.
- Call 119 for an emergency in Korea.
Where to eat near Muakjae
Muakjae is a residential food area rather than a famous dining district. Search Naver Map around the station for simple Korean meals:
- 김밥: Rice rolls that are convenient before a walk
- 국밥: Rice with hot soup
- 칼국수: Knife-cut noodle soup
- 백반: A home-style set meal with rice and side dishes
- 편의점 도시락: Convenience-store lunchbox
Check opening hours and recent reviews on the day of your visit. Small neighborhood restaurants may close between lunch and dinner or take an irregular day off.
Continue the route to Dongnimmun
After a short forest walk, take Line 3 one stop south to Dongnimmun for Independence Gate, Seodaemun Prison History Hall and Yeongcheon Market. This combines nature and modern Korean history in one day.

Final local tip
Muakjae is valuable because it does not feel designed for tourists. Keep the plan simple: cross the sky bridge, enjoy one short forest section and return before you are tired. Save a longer mountain hike for a day when you have proper shoes, weather and daylight.
Trail access, closures, weather conditions and business hours can change. Confirm important details with official signs and Naver Map before starting.
