Seoul Station Guide: Hotels, Namdaemun Food and a Walkable Arrival-Day Route

Seoul Station is the city’s main transportation hub for the Airport Railroad (AREX), KTX high-speed trains and Subway Lines 1 and 4. It is extremely convenient, but the station is large and its exits lead to very different neighborhoods.

This guide connects your arrival, a nearby hotel, Culture Station Seoul 284, Sungnyemun Gate and Namdaemun Market into a practical walking route. Walking times are approximate and depend on the exit, hotel entrance and traffic lights.

Quick answer: Is Seoul Station a good place to stay?

• Best for: Airport access, KTX trips and travelers moving between cities
• Nearby subway: Lines 1 and 4, plus AREX
• Walking difficulty: Moderate because the station is large and some routes include slopes or long underground passages
• Taxi needed: Usually no for Namdaemun and central attractions, but useful with heavy luggage
• Important: “Near Seoul Station” can mean the east or west side, which are not equally convenient for every itinerary

Which side of Seoul Station should you stay on?

The east side is generally better for Culture Station Seoul 284, Sungnyemun Gate, Namdaemun Market and central Seoul sightseeing. The west side is calmer and can be useful for hotels, offices and connections toward the airport railroad side. Check the exact exit before booking.

If you arrive with a large suitcase, follow signs for elevators rather than automatically taking the closest escalator or staircase. Allow at least 10–15 extra minutes to navigate inside the station.

Access: Connected to Seoul Station Exit 12 according to VISITKOREA.
Best for: Travelers with luggage, airport transfers and early KTX departures.
Note: The indoor connection is convenient, but the walk through the station can still feel long.

K-POP Hotel Seoul Station

Approximate walk: VISITKOREA describes it as about two minutes from Exit 10.
Best for: Budget-conscious travelers who want quick Line 1 and Line 4 access.

Ramada Hotel & Suites Seoul Namdaemun

Best for: Visitors who want to be between Seoul Station, Namdaemun and City Hall.
Walking note: It is convenient for central attractions, but verify the exact route if carrying luggage.

Recommended arrival-day walking route

1. AREX or KTX arrival → Hotel luggage drop

Do not begin sightseeing with your suitcase. Seoul Station and the surrounding crossings are busy, so leave your bags at your hotel or use an official luggage service after checking its current hours and conditions.

2. Hotel → Culture Station Seoul 284

Walk to the restored former Seoul Station building, now called Culture Station Seoul 284. It hosts exhibitions and cultural programs. VISITKOREA currently lists general hours as 11:00–19:00, with Monday closure, but exhibitions and access can change between programs. Check before visiting.

3. Culture Station Seoul 284 → Seoullo 7017

Continue to Seoullo 7017, an elevated pedestrian route around Seoul Station. It offers a different view of the railway and city center. This is optional in bad weather or when you are tired after a flight.

4. Seoul Station → Sungnyemun Gate

Walk east toward Sungnyemun, commonly called Namdaemun Gate. Allow roughly 10–15 minutes from the main station area. Use designated crossings and follow the pedestrian route rather than trying to cross wide roads directly.

5. Sungnyemun → Namdaemun Market

Continue for about 5–10 minutes to Namdaemun Market. The market sells clothing, kitchenware, souvenirs, accessories and food. Individual shops have different opening days and hours, so the whole market does not follow one timetable.

6. Lunch at Namdaemun Kalguksu Alley

For a local meal, visit Namdaemun Market Kalguksu Alley (남대문시장 칼국수골목). Stalls specialize in knife-cut noodle soup and steamed barley rice sets. VISITKOREA notes that the small entrance can be difficult to find and is near Hoehyeon Station Exit 5. Seating is close together and the atmosphere is informal.

Useful phrase: 칼국수 하나 주세요 (Kalguksu hana juseyo) — “One kalguksu, please.”

7. Namdaemun Market → Myeongdong or hotel

If you still have energy, continue toward Shinsegae Department Store and Myeongdong. Otherwise, walk back to the hotel. The return to Seoul Station generally takes 10–20 minutes depending on where you are inside the market.

• Basic route: About 45–75 minutes of walking spread across the day
• With Seoullo and Myeongdong: About 75–120 minutes
• Terrain: Urban pavements, large crossings, station corridors and some slopes
• With luggage: Drop it off before starting

Airport Railroad tips

• AREX has different train services; check the stops and ticket type before boarding.
• The Airport Railroad platforms are deep underground, so allow extra transfer time.
• Confirm the latest fare and timetable on the official AREX or Incheon Airport website.
• If transferring to KTX, follow the overhead signs and do not rely only on a map pin.
• Save your hotel’s Korean name, address and nearest exit.

Who should stay near Seoul Station?

Choose Seoul Station if you are arriving by airport train, taking several KTX day trips or staying only one or two nights. For nightlife, Hongdae may be more convenient. For palaces and traditional streets, Anguk or Jongno may offer a more enjoyable neighborhood atmosphere.
