Why Do Koreans Remove Their Shoes Indoors?
Removing shoes indoors is one of the most visible customs in Korea. It is practical, easy to follow and connected to the way Korean living spaces developed.
The Floor Is Living Space
Traditional Korean homes used ondol floor heating. People sat, ate and slept close to the warm floor, so keeping it clean was important. Modern homes still treat the indoor floor as a clean living area.
Where Should You Remove Shoes?
Always remove shoes when entering a private home. Some traditional restaurants, guesthouses, temples, clinics and activity spaces also require it. Look for a raised floor, shoe rack, slippers or other guests’ shoes.
How to Do It Politely
Step out of your shoes at the entrance without walking farther inside in outdoor footwear. Place the shoes neatly together. Use indoor slippers if they are provided, but bathroom slippers should stay in the bathroom.
What About Socks?
Clean socks are a good idea when visiting a home or a shoe-off restaurant. Bare feet may feel too casual in some settings.
When You Are Unsure
Pause at the entrance and observe. You can ask, “Shoes off?” while pointing to your shoes. Most hosts will understand immediately.
A Small Detail That Matters
Taking off your shoes is not a complicated ceremony. It shows that you recognize the boundary between outdoors and the clean indoor space.
