Korea Tax Refund Guide for Tourists: Immediate Refund vs Airport Refund
Tourists shopping in Korea may be eligible for a refund of VAT and certain consumption taxes. The process depends on whether the store gives an immediate refund or issues a refund document for later use.
Quick Answer
Show your passport before paying. If the store supports an immediate refund and your purchase meets the limits, tax is deducted at checkout. Otherwise, keep the refund document and complete the process at a downtown counter, mobile service or departure airport.
Who Is Eligible?
According to VISITKOREA, a non-Korean visitor generally must stay in Korea for less than six months, buy eligible goods, leave Korea within three months of purchase and take the goods out of the country. Overseas Koreans have separate residency and stay requirements.
The current minimum eligible purchase is KRW 15,000 per receipt. Goods should be new and unused when customs inspection is required.
Immediate Tax Refund
At participating stores, present your passport before payment. The official limits currently state that one payment must be at least KRW 15,000 but less than KRW 1,000,000, and total eligible spending for immediate refunds during the trip must not exceed KRW 5,000,000.
Check the receipt before leaving. A “Tax Refund” sign does not always mean the refund was already deducted; some shops only issue documents for a later claim.
General or Airport Refund
- Ask for the tax-refund document when paying.
- Keep the receipt, passport and purchased goods together.
- At the airport, check in but do not put refund items in checked baggage yet if customs may need to inspect them.
- Complete customs export confirmation when required.
- Check the baggage, pass security and use the designated refund counter or kiosk.
At Incheon Airport, official guidance currently identifies refund facilities in both terminals, including areas near Gate 28 in Terminal 1 and Gate 253 in Terminal 2. Follow the airport signs because counters and operating arrangements can change.
Downtown Refund Counters
Downtown counters and kiosks may provide refunds before departure, but each counter may handle only its own refund company. You may still need customs confirmation when leaving Korea. Bring your passport, goods, refund document and an international credit card if the operator requires a guarantee.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting to show a passport at checkout
- Throwing away the refund document
- Checking the baggage before customs confirmation
- Assuming every product or store is eligible
- Opening or using goods that customs may ask to inspect
- Arriving at the airport without extra processing time
